Caldecott Album -- June 27, 1999

During the annual American Library Association's convention in New Orleans, Louisana Mary Azarian was awarded the Caldecott Award for her wonderful illustrations which accompanied the text of my book Snowflake Bentley. As the author I was invited to the festivities surrounding Mary's acceptance of the award. Rich and I attended the Caldecott Award banquet on Sunday evening, June 27, 1999. Sarah and Justin were there too. We had a real good time.

There was much merry making. Editors and publishing representatives alike were very pleased that Snowflake Bentley was being recognized as the "best illustrated children's book published in 1998."
The following day Mary Azarian and I autographed books in the convention's exhibit area. The publisher ran out of copies of the book and had to ship more in. The lines were long but the experience was exhilerating.
Once we returned home Mary Azarian sent me the original art for the portrait of Snowflake Bentley that was used on the cover and in the interior of the book. It is a treasured gift.
